My name is Eugenia. I am a felting artist with more than 7 years of experience, and I do not know how to sew at all :) I have always envied artists who dress their characters in beautiful clothes... Recently I learned to knit simple things, but with sewing I just can not proceed. But I found a way out!
This tutorial is for people like me who do not like to sew (but, of course, not only for them).
We are going to felt a unicorn, not a simple one but the one in a striped jumpsuit. Of course, we will sew. But just a little ;)
Materials (you can experiment with the colors of wool and other materials if you want):
- coarse undyed wool for the base;
- carded wool (I have dusty rose, white, black);
- sock, I have striped and brand new :)
- yarn (I have white and gray);
- felting needles (No. 32 for the warp; No. 36 and / or 38 for the main work);
- base for felting;
- sewing needle, thread;
- glue, scissors.
1. Let's start with the jumpsuit. Take the sock and cut off the lower part.
2. Cut out the lower part of the sock in a semicircle.
3. Sew from the backl side and turn out. That's what should happen.
4. Felt the base of undyed wool — the torso and head of a unicorn. Start by creating an oval-shaped part. Gradually increase the volume from the bottom. From time to time, try on a sock-jumpsuit.
5. Make the lower part of the workpiece torso more flat, so the unicorn could sit. To do this, carefully work it with a needle. For the initial fast felting use a thick needle No. 32. If there is no such thing, No. 36 will do.
6. Prepare two identical pieces of undyed wool. Twist them into tight cone-shaped parts — they will be the legs of a unicorn.
7. Evenly distribute these parts in the jumpsuit in the area of the legs. And then place the main workpiece. Let the legs remain soft, the details do not need to go away. Due to the soft legs, the unicorn will be able to sit.
8. For the muzzle, take a piece of undyed wool, tight-twist it, gently felt.
9. Cover the unicorn's head with a colored carded wool. I have a dusty pink material.
10. Felt two oval and/or pointed parts for ears of colored carded wool. The tips leave fluffy.
11. Stick the ears to the head. Tightly press the part with the fluffed tip to the base, carefully work the surface around the ear with the needle.
12. Add a white wool on muzzle.
13. Felt a cone of white carded wool. It will be a horn. Felt the item the same way you did with the ears.
14. With a needle, make small indentations for the eyes.
15. Make two solid balls for eyes of white carded wool, felt them in.
16. Add the pupils made of black wool. Just use the needle to mark the nostrils.
17. Mark the mouth with a small pea of black wool.
18. Now let's get the hooves off. Take two identical pieces of colored carded wool of the same color as the unicorn's head. Pile two oval details as in the photo. You do not need to leave fluffy tips, because we will sew the details.
19. Add some white wool to highlight the hooves.
20. In order to sew the hooves, you need a large sewing needle and a fairly strong thread. I use yarn.
21. After the hooves are sewn on, tuck the sock to close the threads.
22. The mane and tail are left. I use two colors of yarn: gray and white. You can take any other.
23. Wind the yarn in several layers. I use a felting pad for convenience. But you can take, for example, a cardboard.
24. Now carefully remove the yarn from the base and tie it in the middle with a thread.
25. Cut on both sides and fold in half.
26. With a needle make a small hole on the unicorn's head to secure the hair.
27. Then the mane can be sewn. But I'm not a lover of sewing, so I use glue. Drip a few drops into the recess and press the mane well. For reliability, you can work out the center of the attachment with a needle. Ready!
28. Gently trim the mane with scissors.
29. According to the same principle do the tail. For fastening we use glue, or we sew.
30. Unicorn is ready! :)
