I make almost all of my products using mohair – I love this beautiful material! Few people know that the name mohair came for the Turkish word ‘muyhyar’, that means “a perfect fleece”. Mohair yarn is made from the hair of Angora goats. Initially such goats were found only in Turkey, the word Ankara (Angora), is the name for the capital city of Turkey.
Until 1849, the Turkish province of Ankara was the sole producer of Angora goats. Today mohair is appreciated as one of the most magnificent natural fibers in the world.
• Mohair possesses a number of unique properties that are superior to other natural fibers. The hollow fibers of mohair trap in the warmth, providing good thermal insulation, even in freezing temperatures.
• Mohair can be twisted and stretched, without causing damage to the fiber. It is one of the strongest types of animal fibers.
• Mohair doesn’t irritate the skin; those who have skin sensitive to wool can still enjoy wearing mohair.
• The natural elasticity of mohair allows it to be stretched by up to 30% and return to form. Clothes made from this fabric won’t crease or stretch out of shape.
• Mohair easily absorbs and gives out moisture, taking away sweat from the skin. Clothes made from the light fibres of mohair can be not only warming, but also cooling, ideally suited for winter or summer clothing.
• Mohair has the ability to accept and keep dye, resisting time and wear.
• Natural mohair isn’t a flammable material.
