Making Leather Cover for Car Documents
- Difficulty: Very easy
-
Let`s begin creating a cover for car documents.
To do this, you will need:
- A4 size leather sheet;
- insert for documents;
- threads.
Tools: cutting knife, ruler, corner, scissors, punches, slicker, awl.
The pattern is below.
Mark all the details according to the pattern and cut out.
So, all the parts are of the right size, now let's process each of them.
Take a coin, use it to round the corners of the cover and the inner pockets in 5-6 cuts.
Then mark the flesh side, for parts not to get mixed and be in his place.
Mark a pocket for cards.
Having marked, go to the cutting.
(!) Important! When cutting the pocket for cards, leave 2-3 mm on the edge, after turning, you can easily cut these off, that will keep you from cutting more than needed!
At the edges of the slot, putting a punch (diameter 2 mm) for a slot, punch holes. This makes it easier to insert and take the card out from the pocket.
Take the chamfer and remove all the chamfers. First, the inner edges of the pockets.
Then, paint all the edges, from which the chamfers are removed, with cream paint.
Let dry (2-3 minutes) and apply wax on the edge. With a piece of wax, rub the to the entire edge to make it whitish wax.
Take the slicker and rub the edge vigorously until the wax melts and is absorbed into the leather.
That's what you should get as a result.
Then take a punch with two teeth with 5 mm step, we will use it as a marker. One tooth rests on the edge (where you need a seam) and carefully, without strong pressure, move it along the edge, for the second tooth to leave the line for a seam. Start marking from inner pockets, and then move to the cover.
According to the layout of the punch, mark the center with a ruler and make a hole with an awl. From this point you will make holes, for the leather stretch to be even as making holes stretches leather and if you punch not from the center but from the edge, the part can be deformed and the curved seams or uneven parts may not match each other.
Begin to make holes. From the center punch with 5 teeth. Firstly, make holes in a straight line to the bend of the marking at the corner, then do the same from the center to another corner.
At the corner, punch with two teeth and also along the line of the corner rounding. One tooth is exposed to the existing hole, and the other is strictly placed on the line, thus punching a semicircle.
Having reached a straight line with a double punch, take the punch with 5 teeth again and make a straight line of holes to the edge of the part.
As a result, the inner pockets should look like this.
Now we need to move the layout of the holes on the cover. To do this, take the pockets and put on the front of the cover with flesh side up, that is, face to face, for the marks to match (Л-П).
Take the awl and gently apply the pocket, placing it evenly. Make dots on the cover with the awl. Keep the awl at 90 degree angle and try to put a mark in the middle of the hole, in order to reduce the offset.
Having put the dots down, you cannot avoid moving away from the offset, so apply the ruler as evenly as possible near the dots to draw the line with the awl.
Punch the marked holes on the cover.
All parts are ready to be assembled.
Measure out the right amount of thread. Three seam lengths + 15 cm.
Begin to sew, a simple saddle seam. Stitch from the top to the bottom to make a fastening at the bottom.
Then just sew the second pocket. From top to the bottom, the fasten at the bottom.
All details are stitched, go to the edge processing.
Use dremel, but you can also use sandpaper, only longer. The task is to align the ends. Firstly, align all the planes, then process the angles.
All the edges are aligned, now remove the chamfer.
After that paint over all the edges.
Let the paint dry and apply wax.
Rub all the edges with a slicenum to have smooth shine.
Now take the finish and sponge, apply them on the leather in circular movements.
Then let the finish soak and rub it with a woolen cloth to make it shiny.
Place the insert for the documents.
Now take a piece of leather and press it through the center, for the leather to settle down and get used to a new form.
The cover is ready.
