Pince-nez as an optical device for vision correction appeared in the XVI century. Initially, its glasses were fixed on a copper or iron spring, later, in order not to injure the nose skin with metal, leather pads began to be attached under it. Pince-nez have been widely used since the XVII century. The first documentary evidence of the use of pince-nez by the royal personages of the Russian Empire were photographs of the 1860s. Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, photographed in pince-nez. Subsequently, other princes and princesses of Russia began to publicly wear pince-nez. In 1906, a postage stamp appeared in Luxembourg, which depicted Grand Duke William IV in pince-nez, which made pince-nez an accessory of high life in Europe.
Pince-nez were equally popular with both men and women, and were a symbol of the intelligence of their wearer. It is believed that pince—nez were a more popular and used optical accessory in the period from the end of the XIX - to the beginning of the XX century than modern glasses with earpieces, which came into active use since the 1920s. In the 1910s, rimless pince-nez models became fashionable.
