The cult of the wolf among the Slavs | vlh. Veleslav

The book examines in detail the image of the wolf in the Slavic tradition, in archaic beliefs and Christian literature, traces the role of the wolf in the military cults of Indo-Europeans, primarily Slavs and Germans, analyzes the complex of folk ideas about witchcraft and werewolfism on extensive ethnographic material, lists in detail the "wolf days" in the traditional calendar of eastern, western and southern Slavs, the testimonies of ancient, medieval and subsequent authors who wrote about cinocephalians and Amazons, about Christian saints with dog heads and the guardsmen of Ivan the Terrible marked with the sign of the dog's head are given.

Conspiracies and some other ritual texts are highlighted in color, known both from written sources (for example, the famous conspiracy from the Psalter of the XV century.) and from ethnographic records of late time.

Nowadays, many people talk about the desire to live in harmony with nature, about love for animals and the importance of ecological thinking, but you can verify the authenticity of these feelings and aspirations only by living surrounded by pristine nature, finding traces of wild animals in the morning — hares, moose, wild boars, as well as wolves and even a bear — next to the porch of his house. Having moved to Karelia last year and settled in a small house on the site of an old Finnish farm surrounded by forests, far from human habitation, my wife and I got this opportunity and never had a reason to regret our choice.
