The book examines in detail the image of the wolf in the Slavic tradition, in archaic beliefs and Christian literature, traces the role of the wolf in the military cults of Indo-Europeans, primarily Slavs and Germans, analyzes the complex of folk ideas about witchcraft and werewolfism on extensive ethnographic material, lists in detail the "wolf days" in the traditional calendar of eastern, western and southern Slavs, the testimonies of ancient, medieval and subsequent authors who wrote about cinocephalians and Amazons, about Christian saints with dog heads and the guardsmen of Ivan the Terrible marked with the sign of the dog's head are given.
Conspiracies and some other ritual texts are highlighted in color, known both from written sources (for example, the famous conspiracy from the Psalter of the XV century.) and from ethnographic records of late time.
