Kuge. A rare antique armchair. XIX century. Japan

Kuge is an ancient Japanese non-Samurai court aristocracy. In Soviet literature, they were often called the tribal aristocracy, in contrast to the samurai, called the service aristocracy. According to tradition, the wife of the emperor (the wife of the mikado) had to be necessarily from the Fujiwara clan (related to kuge, not samurai). After the samurai (previously considered commoners) came to power, the kuge lost their influence, becoming an ornament of the imperial court. Unlike the samurai, they were known for their pacifism. In the Heian era, they preferred to live exclusively in Kyoto, spending their time in poetry classes, giving all local power to the governors, who later gathered samurai squads and took power into their own hands, turning into daimyo.

Strong, stable, will last for many centuries.
Hand-bent wood, leather on the back on both sides. The original rivets have been preserved, thanks to which it was possible to change the decorative upholstery.
Pillow - matching, made of thick fabric of the Soviet period, removable cover.
