Samurai women in Feudal Japan were called by the term onna-bugeisha, literally translated as "a woman trained in martial arts". The word "Samurai" in relation to the fair sex is used only colloquially, since semantically it can refer exclusively to the masculine gender.
Even if the Bushido code did not force women of the samurai class to participate in battles, they, nevertheless, were obliged to be able to protect themselves and their own home, as well as teach children the basics of martial arts. As a rule, the traditional female weapons were the yari spear, naginata, ropes and chains. The first weapon that a samurai girl received on the day of her coming of age was a short kaiken dagger, used both in close combat and as a projectile. Kaiken had to be constantly with the hostess — in the sleeve or in the belt, so that she was always ready to fight for her home and family.
