Bone Knitting Needle

Another ancient instrument - a needle for knitting.

Needle knitting (naalbinding) was widespread. Well-known technique of knitting "digging", which remained in the Russian North before the beginning of the XX century.
Bone knitting needle is more time-consuming than knitting, but the knitted fabric cannot be dissolved by pulling the end of the thread.
Knitting was originally a male craft and in the Viking age, Scandinavian men not only went to military campaigns, hunting and fishing, they also used to knit, using a bone needle.
Connected to that needle, the canvas was sturdy, durable and good at keeping warm.
To make the stitches even need a special flat needle and it should be quite wide, and its width depends on the thickness of the thread. The most common was knitting stockings, but not just my legs warmed our ancestors. Special sweaters for sailors knit, usually with short sleeves. The clothes of the sailors were not dampened by the cool spray, there was a tradition to knit a sweater from home undyed yarn, which is not purified from animal fat, getting a water-repellent effect.
