Who is he — Dionysus? The god of enchantment and nightmare, wandering in the thickets and happy deliverance, a crazy god whose presence plunges into madness. His conception, his birth is mysterious and dramatic...
Author: Walter F. Otto
This book by the outstanding philologist and philosopher of the nineteenth century Walter Otto is the most complete and detailed study of the archetype of Dionysus. After the insights of Nietzsche, who returned Dionysus as the main category in our culture, Walter Otto's book turns out to be a unique interpretation of the mythology and symbolism of this deity. This book is for everyone who is close to this amazing god of passion, ecstasy and intoxication.
Preface
What I have presented in this paper in many ways significantly contradicts the generally accepted trends in the study of mythology. Usually, the study of ancient beliefs involves tracing evolution, which begins with the first primitive ideas about the deity and ends with the greatness of its classical manifestation.. In this work, on the contrary, in the center of critical reflection are the origins of beliefs that appeared much earlier than the activities of individual poets and artists. In fact, without this powerful impulse, their activity would be completely impossible. Compared to the basis of creation, all the late strokes, no matter how significant they may be, turn out to be trifling.
Those who call such a method non-historical significantly limit the concept of "historical". They assume that where greatness exists, the most significant is not the phase of emergence, but the process of development, the fixation of which is often pure boredom.. Such an assumption contradicts the foundations of all religions. It is also incompatible with the very nature of creativity and its purpose in general, regardless of where and how it manifests itself in the outside world..
It becomes obvious how great is the need for a new foundation for the study of the forms of the deity.
Therefore, this book begins with the problem of myth and cult in general, and only then proceeds to the study of the god Dionysus.
I am fully aware of the risk involved in studying the Greek god, who was a sacred and eternal symbol for the greatest minds. May the pages that I dedicate to the memory of these great people not be unworthy of their memory.
