Diospyros crassiflora, commonly known as the Gabon ebony, African ebony, West African ebony, and Benin ebony, is a species of lowland tropical tree in the family Ebenaceae, endemic to West Africa. The wood produced by this particular tree is considered to be the blackest of all diospyros wood species, and the core of this tree has been used since ancient Egyptian times. It is hard and durable, with very fine pores and polished to a high gloss. It is used to make sculptures, carvings, canes, billiard cues, door handles, handles for tools and knives, guns, black piano keys, organ stops, fingerboards and bridges for guitars, as well as chess pieces.
Rosewood wood is characterized by color — from yellow to pink with a red pattern.
This very hard and dense, superbly polished wood is used in the manufacture of furniture for small expensive objects, such as humidors, as well as in the manufacture of musical instruments.
Since the relatively high price of this wood rarely allows it to be used in the form of whole pieces, veneer and intarsias are usually used. When making guitars from rosewood, sometimes a shell is made, instead of maple or rosewood. It is also often used to make blockflates. More of this wood makes beautiful handles for knives.
