"The Book of Werewolves" (Eng. The Book of Were-Wolves: Being an Account of a Terrible Superstition) is a book by the British priest, preacher, hagiographer, Gothic writer, collector and researcher of folklore Sabin Baring-Gould (1834—1924), published in 1865 and representing a generalization of European historical information and folk beliefs about lycanthropy - the mythical ability to turn into a wolf, that is, about werewolves - werewolves. In the future , the book was repeatedly reprinted.
Wolf-werewolf, werewolf — one of the most striking characters of folk fantasy, a favorite hero of folklore and art works from antiquity to the present day. Baring-Gould approaches the topic from a rationalistic standpoint.
The first ten chapters of sixteen provide an overview of the literature on the topic of lycanthropy, however, starting from chapter IX, a turn is made to describe the crimes of serial killers, cannibals, grave desecrators, etc., which have a very controversial connection with the stated topic. Including three chapters is the story of the associate of Jeanne d’Ark and the prototype of Bluebeard Gilles de Re, whose guilt is now in considerable doubt. The last chapter is devoted to a sermon on werewolves by the medieval theologian and preacher Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg.
The main idea of Baring-Gould throughout the book: the idea of werewolves is the product of an ignorant mind, a naive attempt to explain wild, bestial human behavior.
Thanks to the author's extensive erudition, large-scale approach and rich material, the Book of Werewolves is still one of the few historical and philosophical reviews on lycanthropy and it remains one of the most cited works on the topic.
