About the book
In the middle of the XVII century, the so-called “Book of the Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows” (DE UMBRARUM REGNI NOVEM PORTIS) was published in Venice. The author and publisher was a printer named Aristide Torchia (1620—1667), who soon became interested in the Holy Inquisition. He was arrested in Venice, tortured in Rome, where he was burned on the Campo dei Fiori in February 1667. At that time, people were no longer burned at the stake so often, but this one was burned anyway. The composition of the crime: intercourse with the Devil. An aggravating circumstance is the reproduction of nine engravings from the famous "Delomelanicon" - the classics of the black book; according to legend, Lucifer himself was considered the author of the engravings of this book. The name “Delomelanicon" comes from the Greek: delos - clear, revealed. And melas — black, dark. It turns out “ "An appeal to darkness” or "To shed light on it”. According to legend, Lucifer, after his defeat and exile from heaven, compiled for his followers a certain set of magical formulas — a kind of handbook on the world of shadows: “ Delomelanicon”. This terrible book was carefully hidden, burned several times, sold for insane money by those few chosen ones in whose hands it still fell... The illustrations in it were hellish riddles. Those who could unravel their meaning with the help of the text and relevant knowledge, they allowed them to summon the Prince of Darkness..."
