Malachite is one of the oldest gems known to man. The stone is mentioned in the works of ancient Greek scientists Theophrastus and Pliny the Elder. It is believed that this is where its name came from: "malach" – "mallow", since the color and pattern of malachite could be associated with the leaves of this plant, or "malakos" - "soft", because of its physical properties.
In ancient times, malachite was actively used for making jewelry and amulets, in architecture and cosmetology. Malachite seals were highly valued.
The malachite "boom" began in the late XVIII - early XIX centuries, after the development of the Gumeshevsky and Mednorudyansk deposits in the Urals.
Numerous malachite products by Russian masters are exhibited in St. Petersburg at the Hermitage.
It is believed that the more complex and richer the malachite pattern, the more magical power it has.
