Madder - (Rubia tinctorum) - one of the oldest and most commonly used traditional dyes known to man. It has an extensive history in Turkey, India and Iran, where it is still used for fabric dyeing.
Madder is a complex dye containing many colors. By manipulating the mordant, pH and temperature, you can get a range of shades - red, orange-red and terracotta. In combination with other dyes, madder can give crimson, purple, rusty, brown and almost black colors. Madder extract colors in the deepest colors with alum and calcium carbonate (chalk). If you add a weak acid to the dye bath, such as tartar crystals, you will get a soft orange hue.
50 grams of madder extract will color approximately 750 grams of fiber in a dark shade.
