"The Knight, Death and the Devil" is one of the three "master engravings" by the German artist Albrecht Dürer, created in 1513.
The engraving is clothed in the armor of a Christian knight, in a narrow gorge, accompanied by a Devil with a pig's snout and Death on horseback. Death holds an hourglass to remind the knight of the brevity of life and futility of his efforts. The devil is on your heels, ready to take advantage of every mistake. But the rider moves through the gorge, ignoring or not looking at the creatures around him. Knight demonstrates an absolute contempt for danger and doubt, often seen as a symbol of honor and courage.
Death, the Devil, and the landscape, all depicted in somber tones of "the Northern Renaissance". Both characters are threatening to the knight, which is encased and protected in the literal and figurative sense in the armor of their faith.
For several years after the creation of The Knight, Death and the Devil, Durer was one of the most sought-after artists in northern Europe.
