Fergusonite is a mineral of the complex oxide subclass, Y(Nb, Ta)O4.
It was first discovered in 1826 by the famous geologist Wilhelm Heidinger in Greenland. Named after British politician and geologist Robert Ferguson.
The crystal structure is close to scheelite. Resinous, diamond luster. The fracture is cancellous (up to uneven). The Mohs hardness of 5,0–6,5; density 5600–7100 kg/m3. Cleavage is clear across the elongation of the crystals.
How to keep
A sharp impact on a hard surface can cause chipping.
It can be cleaned with room temperature water.
