Kamagong is the Filipino name for mabolo (Latin: diospyros blancoi), a tree in the ebony family. It is cultivated as a fruit tree (the fruit is called "velvet persimmon" or " velvet apples»). It belongs to valuable wood species, has a hard, dark-colored wood. Used in furniture making, carved sculpture, etc. The wood is very hard and dense, dark in color. Like some other hardwoods, kamagong is called ironwood because its products are as strong as iron. The Philippine name mabolo (Tagalog. mabolo-hairy) is given to the fruit for its "shaggy" appearance, the fruit is all covered with small hairs.
