The crown (koruna) is a festive maiden or wedding headdress, known in Russia since the XVI century. There are several varieties of such hats. But the type of construction is always about the same — a wide, rigid, ornate ribbon wraps around the head above the forehead and is tied under the braid. At the back, it can be decorated with lush silk bows fastened with brooches, a light veil can cover the crown from above.
One of the most elegant types of crown is openwork, embroidered with gold cord, pearls, rhinestones and semiprecious stones, in the form of a multi—lobed crown. Such headdresses were common in the XVIII-XIX centuries in the north-west of the Russian Empire — in the Arkhangelsk, Novgorod, St. Petersburg, Olonets, Pskov provinces. Girls from wealthy families could wear such a headdress in addition to their most expensive festive outfit — silk, brocade or damask sundress with muslin, silk or brocade sleeves.
