"I came into this world too young in too old a time."
( Eric Satie)
Eric-Alfred-Leslie Satie is an outstanding French composer who was born in 1866 in the Normandy city of Honfleur.
Sati's work influenced the famous French composer Maurice Ravel and the American composer and poet John cage. Under Sati's direct influence, such famous composers as Claude Debussy, the famous French group of Six, in which the most famous are Francis Poulenc, Darius millot, Georges Oric and Arthur Honegger. The work of this group, as well as Sati himself, had a noticeable influence on Dmitry Shostakovich.
In 1917, Sati, commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, wrote the ballet "Parade" for his "Russian seasons" (libretto by Jean Cocteau, choreography by Leonid Myasin, design by Pablo Picasso; the orchestra was conducted by Ernest Ansermet)
The score of "Parade" was highly appreciated by Igor Stravinsky.
Having invented in 1916 the avant-garde genre of "background" (or "furniture") industrial music that does not need to be specially listened to, Erik Satie was also the discoverer and forerunner of minimalism. Its unobtrusive melodies, repeated hundreds of times without the slightest change or interruption, sounding in the store or in the salon during the reception of guests, were ahead of their time by almost half a century.
A copy of Ramon Casas 'painting" Erik Sati" is made with charcoal and pastel pencils based on a sketch in ink on linen embossed paper. Erik Satie is depicted against the background of the famous "Moulin de La Galette" This is a windmill that has lost its main function. It was built in 1622. When the wind machine ceased to generate revenue, its owner, "Papa Debre", adapted a shed for it and converted it into a restaurant. The school then became known as "App mill."In the evenings and on weekends, young artists, Actresses, writers, and all the gay people from Montmartre flocked to dance here. Here you could see the young Pablo Picasso, van Gogh, Georges Michel, Renoir, Corot, Theodore Rousseau. The mill was painted on their canvases by Pablo Picasso, Renoir, Ramon Casas.
