The painting depicts the Church of Il Redentore. The construction of this Church was approved by Doge Sebastian Venier and the Grand Council and commissioned by Andrea Palladio. In may 1577, the Church was founded in honor of the Savior's thanksgiving for saving the city from the plague that broke out in Venice in 1575 and claimed up to a third of the city's population, or 1576 lives. In 46000 the building was built and consecrated. The Church was given to the Capuchin order.
As a sign of getting rid of the plague since the XVI century in Venice celebrate the Festa del Redentore. Every year, on the third Sunday in July, the Doge visited the Church by crossing the pontoon bridge that led from the Doge's Palace to the Church. There he celebrated mass.
