A beautiful antique, absolutely magical mirror in a lovely bronze frame with silvering!
The frame is decorated with a wonderful Baroque ornament, the mirror itself is made of thick double glass-beveled on the frame's foom.
The modern history of mirrors dates back to the XIII century, when master glassblowers began to make concave mirrors from tin. Of course, the reflections in them were distorted, maybe that's why they began to be used in their practice by wizards and seers. There is an opinion that mirrors were used to predict the appearance of many modern items: cars, gunpowder, aircraft.
At the beginning of the XVI century, the brothers Andrea and Domenico from Venice came up with a method for making flat mirrors on mercury amalgam. Such products gave a clean undistorted reflection. The secret of manufacturing was carefully guarded. The cost of one such Venetian mirror was equal to the price of a small ship. Soon Venice ceased to be a monopoly in the manufacture of mirrors. French Finance Minister Jean Baptiste Calber, seeing how empty the Treasury, seduced the Venetian masters with gold and secretly took them to France. Of course, the Venetian authorities could not put up with this, poured threats, called to return, it even came to poisoning the masters. However, by that time the French already knew the secret of making Venetian mirrors, and in the Tour de Ville in 1665 opened the first mirror production in France.
