Heavy metal (English heavy metal — "heavy metal") is a genre of rock music, the first and original direction of metal. Usually this word is called "classic" metal in the form in which it was created in the 1970s by bands such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Sometimes "heavy metal" serves as a hyperonym and it refers to the whole metal as a whole, and its original form is called "traditional heavy metal" or "classical metal".

Classic heavy metal flourished in the 1980s thanks to such bands as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Manowar, Motorhead, Accept and others, after which it gradually began to give way in popularity to new genres. However, even in the XXI century, many bands, both old and new, continue to perform traditional heavy, often mixed with power metal close to it.
