It is believed that Cologne was released in 1709. Its Creator was the Italian Giovanni Maria Farina, who lived then in the German city of Cologne. His uncle offered for sale fragrant water, which was an alcoholic solution based on lavender, bergamot and rosemary. Farina recipe seemed too simple and inexpressive, so he improved it by adding oil of citrus plants, cedar and neroli. The resulting fragrance reminded the perfume of the smell of morning freshness after the rain in his homeland in Italy. Created fragrance Farina called "Cologne water" (Kölnischwasser).
