Saint Sava became famous for his angelic life.He was born in 439. Already at the age of 8, he understood the vanity of the world and loved God with all his heart. At this age, he entered the Flavian monastery. After 10 years, he went to Jerusalem to Ephemius the Great and tearfully begged him to take him as a disciple. There he reached such perfection that efimiy himself called him an old boy.He spent .10 years as a hermit, then an angel appeared to him and took him to a cave, where Saint Sava spent another 5 years in seclusion.Only then did the Lord let the Saint know that he should take disciples. After that, novices began to flock to him, soon their number reached 150.Many pilgrims constantly flocked to the monastery to receive saving instruction and blessing and to bring gifts and donations, thanks to which the monks could provide themselves with everything necessary, without being distracted by the cares of the world. Despite the monk's humble refusal to accept the priesthood, he was nevertheless ordained a presbyter at the age of 53, in order to be able to properly lead the disciples.
The large number of novices did not, however, prevent Saint Sava from still cherishing a love of solitude. Every year, following the example of his spiritual father, the monk Euthymius, he went far into the desert during Lent. An implacable enemy of the servants of hell, Saint Sava was always meek and condescending towards people.Saint Sava tamed wild animals, healed the sick, and with his prayers called for the rain of grace to fall on a region plagued by drought and famine. The monk continued the work of planting new monasteries in the desolate desert, so that, in addition to the post of head of the hermits, he had the duties of Confessor of seven monastic communities. Saint Sava wisely led the legions of the humble host of Christ, taking care with all his might to unite the faith of his flock. The emperors sent him to fight the heretics, where he won.
After his death, the Saint's relics remained incorruptible. The Lavra of Saint Sava, which later became a cenobitic monastery, played an outstanding role in the history of Egyptian and Palestinian monasticism. Many saints shone in it: John of Damascus, Cosmas of Maium, Stephen of Savait, Andrew of Crete, etc. It was here that the Typicon was formed and finally adopted, according to which services are still performed in the Orthodox Church, and a significant part of the existing Church hymns were written.
The relics of Saint Sava can be worshipped in Jerusalem.
