Beranger, Pierre Jean de (Beranger) (1780-1857) was a famous French poet, songwriter, most of which became quite popular. At the time of the First Empire (1804-14) songs of Beranger are Epicureanism, good-natured humor, political satire meets only occasionally. The tone of the songs of Beranger has changed dramatically in the years of the Restoration: the poet becomes the spokesman of the people's enmity to the Bourbons, to the nobility and the Catholic reaction, his political satire reaches its heyday. Twice the poet was brought to court (1821 and 1828) a collection of songs and went to jail.
