The symbol of "wind rose" is also called "Rose points to port" and "Sea rose", in cartography it began to be used from about the fourteenth century, although medieval maps!. The origin of the original sign "wind rose" is unknown, it clearly didn't in antiquity and the Early middle Ages.
Heraldic "wind rose" is credited with the values of freedom, adventure, and even purity of thought. In the latter case, the sign "rose of the winds", apparently associated with the way of the Polar star, which is also inextricably linked with this symbol in the nautical context.
The meaning of "Rose" in cartography stems from the graphical images of the symbol. The traditional "roses" can be four, eight and sixteen rays, which indicate the directions of the world (figuratively – "wind").
In this case, the sign "rose of the winds" from the first explorers were accompanied by many other heraldic images. For example, the compasses and the maps of the Royal Fleur-de-Lis indicates the direction of the North, and the Maltese cross – the direction to Jerusalem.
You have to understand that medieval compasses and map image with the sign "rose of the winds" did not have a single standard. As has been said, rose could have a different number of beams of variable length, and additional directions (except the directions).
