"Black Raven" is a Russian Cossack folk song that tells about a warrior's struggle with death, which takes the form of a black Raven.
The author's version of the song on the words non-commissioned officer of the Nevsky infantry regiment Nikolay Verevkin — "Under the green willow" was published among his other songs in 1837.
"During the heavy fighting of the Caucasian mountaineers much has been made of the exploits of don Cossacks. Very often they had alone to defend themselves from the numerous and deadly enemy. The feats accomplished by the don Cossacks during this sixty-year war, so numerous that it is impossible to list them all. Many Cossacks were killed in the mountains and valleys of the Caucasus and over their unknown graves, no cross, nor monument. Died alone, without a witness, the don died in the mountains, surrounded by crows and predatory eagles.
