The name "amethyst" comes from the name of the Greek nymph Ametis. According to the legend, the God of wine Dionysus was passionately in love with a forest nymph. But Ametis refused the advances of a Greek God, because he loved the shepherd of Siricusa. Irate and outraged Dionysus chased her, but she prayed to the goddess Atreide of assistance. At the time, when Dionysus approached the exhausted nymph, she turned into a statue. In an attempt to revive Ametis, Dionysus poured wine statue, but that only turned purple. So on earth appeared stone amethyst.
