Cowries of East Cameroon. Cowrie (eng. Cowry) shells of tropical mollusks, used as money in the Islands of Oceania, China, India, the Arabian Peninsula and in Africa. Believed that they protect from evil, and therefore, cowrie shells, clay models of them put in the walls of buildings and graves. Used in amulets for attraction of money and income growth, in the rituals on attraction, as well as for divination and fortune telling.
In Azerbaijan cowries as money were used until the seventeenth century.
In the XII—XIV centuries in Russia, coinless period, cowries also served as money and were called Ugolok, zhernovkov, snake heads. In Siberia they kept the functions of money before the beginning of the XIX century.
