Gardens of Babylon — one of the Seven wonders of the world. More correct name of this building — the Hanging gardens Amitis (according to other sources — Omanis): it was the name of the wife of the king of Babylon Nebuchadnezzar II, for which the gardens were created.
The Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BC) to fight against the main enemy — Assyria, whose troops twice destroyed the capital of the state of Babylon, signed a military Alliance with Cyaxares, king of the Medes.
By winning, they divided the territory of Assyria between them. Their military Alliance was confirmed by the marriage of Nebuchadnezzar II, the daughter of the median king Amitis. Dusty and noisy Babylon, located on the bare sandy plain, was not pleased the Queen, who grew up in the mountainous and green Mussels. To comfort her, Nebuchadnezzar ordered the construction of the hanging gardens.
In architectural terms the hanging gardens were a pyramid consisting of four tiers-platforms. They were supported by columns at a height of 25 meters. The lower tier had the shape of an irregular quadrangle, the greatest side of which was 42 m, the lowest — 34 m. All the plants were brought from the Mussels.
The pyramid resembled the Vale of eternal blossoms green hill. In the cavity of one of the columns was placed the pipe. Day and night a hundred slaves spun the elevating wheel with leather buckets, feeding water to the gardens. Beautiful gardens with rare trees, fragrant flowers and cool in the sultry Babylonia was truly a wonder of the world.
For the construction of gardens, a shelter for the Queen, was thrown all the forces of the old Kingdom, the whole experience of its builders and mathematicians. Babylon proved to the whole world that can create the world's first monument in honor of love.
