KUNZITE (SPODUMENE)

Kunzite — gemstone, possessing a remarkably beautiful coloration and high transparency. Characteristic pale pink or purple, sometimes lilac or bluish-purple color with admixture of manganese.

The chemical composition is a silicate of aluminium and lithium; jewelry is a kind of widespread mineral spodumene. Named after the American mineralogist J.. Kunz (George Frederick Kunz; 1856–1932), who in 1902 first described it to samples found in the County of San Diego (PCs. California, USA).

Sometimes because of the strong resemblance lilac and purple crystals with most precious variety of quartz, kunzite is sometimes called lithium amethyst.
