Spessartine is a variety of garnet. Named after the place of its discovery in Spessart, North-West of Bavaria, Germany. Was first described in 1832. Spessartine is found considerably less often than other garnets. The size of crystals of gem-quality spessartine minor and faceted stones over 5 carats are considered rare. Good quality spessartine valued much higher than the red grenade. Color spessartine: orange, orange red, brown red, yellow.
