the beginning of the 20th century. The city of Waltershausen in Thuringia has become a world center
for the production of German dolls. The building of the former factory was built in 1902.
Johann Daniel Kestner — Patriarch of Industrial doll production.
The "Grand Prix" award at the 1904 World Rock Fair in St. Louis was a confirmation of high quality and craftsmanship. For the first time, dolls with sleeping, flirting eyes, with an open mouth, with teeth began to be produced at this factory.
It was a thriving manufactory with several thousand factory workers and homeworkers.
The dolls of the Kestner factory are deservedly considered the most recognizable of all German dolls of the late XIX — early XX century, this is a classic image of an antique doll
These are the dolls that Google "pours out" when requesting "JD Kestner dolls.
After the Second World War, the city of Waltershausen ended up in the Soviet zone
after the occupation of Germany, and after the creation of the GDR, the Kestner doll factories were nationalized at that time they were already bankrupt). Thus, those same factories became known as VEB (German. Volkseigener Betrieb — "people's enterprise".
1948 is the year of birth of the VEB Biggi Waltershausen plant. The dolls were produced under the Biggi brand. In beautiful boxes with the logo of a girl in an oval. Many of them have been exported to the USSR since 1951 and have become coveted in Soviet families.
Despite the mass production of VEB Biggi Waltershausen produced high-quality and elegant dolls. They are lightweight and durable. They are so good that they can withstand trips to the sea, bathing, endless combing and dressing up. And the hairstyle is like from the store — not a single hair fell out. The cilia are thick and wide open to the eyebrows.
The inscription on the facade of the factory:
«Für Kinder ist das Beste gut genug» (For children only the best is good enough.)
"Only the best is good enough for children".
There are two versions of why Biggi
1. Biggi in Germany is a diminutive name from Birgitte, in French — Brigitte)
2. Many dolls are made of Biggidur material.
This material was developed by Waltershauser specialists.
Production of Biggie stopped after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Now the factory, unfortunately, is closed.
The information is taken from the website about dolls.
