Masks are irreplaceable attributes for any festival or party. They provide an atmosphere of mystery and joy. Its initial aim was to hide the face, for example, masquerade masks of the first Venetian carnivals, which took place in the 12th century, were very simple but let people from different social layers communicate. Over time, they were becoming more embellished and complicated, with rhinestones, gilt, lace, ribbons, sequins, painting. Various models can be found nowadays. Morettas are black masks worn by patrician women and made of velvet with eyeholes only, without lips and nose. Bauta masks allow to speak, breath and even eat very comfortably, their shape has rather large features and a protruding lower edge. Colombina masks cover the eyes, nose and cheeks and look very elegant. Medico della peste, or the Plague Doctor, came in use on carnivals quite recently — doctors would put garlic and herbs inside the famous long beak of the mask to protect themselves from the deadly disease in the 17th century. Halloween masks are as magnificent as frightening, their main task is to scare to death, these may be skulls, green goblins, scarred and burned heads, hex and witches miens, so one can turn into any evil spirits for a night. Anonymous masks design was originally created by David Lloyd in 1982 and is usually used on protests as well as on night parties. So, each mask has its unique history and would match any holiday.
